I strive to be the Shining Star to my kids!

Dearest Ashley and Abby,

You guys grow up unbelieveably fast. Blink and Kor Kor will go army in 9 years' time. Blink and my Princess may study overseas in 13 years' time, living lives of your own. It seems like only yesterday that I carried my two newborns in my arms, smiling so innocently at Mummy. Our Home Videos never fails to bring back loads of heart-warming memories when you guys were little babies and toddlers. So cute!

Now, Ashley is 9, singing and playing piano so beautifully that is beyond my imagination and sharing his vision for his future (he wants to be a World-Class Singer). Abby just turned 5 this month, the sweetest and caring girl in the whole universe and sharing her newly created stories and songs with me every night. For Mummy, it's a mixed feeling watching you guys grow up so quickly.

I guess all I can do is to stay devoted to you and be generous with my time. You guys know you have always been my number-one priority.

Mummy strives to be a Shining Star to guide you in your growing up years. I'll following the receipe of a Shining Star Mum:

1. Lead by Example. I respect my parents and elders and expect you to be respectful to your grand-parents and elders. I refrain from cold drinks and unhealthy snacks and please do not indulge in cold drinks and unhealthy snacks. I'm positive and open-minded to new experiences and encourage you to try new things and hey, everything is possible, if you think you can do it. I'm honest and candid with you and accept nothing less from you. The list goes on...

2. Develop my kids. As a Head Hunter, Mummy spots Talents. As a Mum, I develop Talents. Mum exposes you to performing arts (wushu & cultural dance) when you were 3years old and Ashley has agreed to continue his wushu after his 6th year to build a strong foundation for dancing. Mum introduced passionate people like Kieran Kor Kor, Jiu Jian Laoshi to you so that you could witness their brilliance and hopefully, be as brilliant as them.

3.Inspire my kids. Mummy teaches you how to view the world and how the world works. And if you see the world as a place of limitation, so it will be. And if you see the world as a place of possibilities, so it will be. Ashley, take the example of you from not knowing how to cartwheel to doing the cartwheel flip without your hands touching the ground. You have proven to yourself that it is possible to achieve something that you thought it was impossible when you were younger. If you gave up trying, you will never do the flip. Good thing is you see the world of possibilities and you did it. Well done!

I can see the effort and hard work you guys put in. Likewise, Mummy is working hard to be the Shining Star to you too. Am sure we will develop our own brilliance that will shine on others too.

Love You,
Your Mummy who embraces what's possible!

Grace under Pressure

Dearest Ashley & Abby,

When Ashley shared with us in the car that some of his classmates cried easily when things did not go well, we could relate to that as we also went through that and we had a good laugh when we recalled the childish behaviours we did when we were younger.

No life is perfect; mine certainly isn't. We all face challenges, both large and small. I fell from a hill in Primary school and my face was hotter than my bruises, I was a loner in secondary school, I was finding my identity in Junior College, I re-took my Engineering paper in University First Year, I witnessed the suffering of my Mother as she went through her cancer treatment, I had a big fight with Daddy in our first year of marriage, I was bed ridden for one week when I was pregnant with Ashley. No one gets through life without experiencing pain and hurt. But you and I have the power to choose to rise above our external circumstances. We always have the choice to be strong and positive when things fall apart. We have the right to use our stumbling blocks as stepping stones to our greatest life.

Besides my Mum, Mummy is deeply inspired by one other Extraordinary Lady who rose above harsh external circumstances when life sent her one of its inevitable curves. Despite her illness, she lives life to the fullest. She truly demonstrates such wonderful grace under pressure. That's what separates leaders from followers. It's that beautiful quality that inspires others and reflects a well-developed spirit. It's a trait that allows you to carve out a spectacular life - one you'll be proud of at the end. She has inspired me to be outrageously energetic and madly alive. Mummy is game to try everything new except Roller Coaster. Ha Ha Ha....

Kids, remember what Mummy always says to you: Crying does not solve the problem. Dry your tears, take a deep breath and think of a solution. It's ok to fail one, twice and as many times as you could possibly can but never give up. There's a beautiful rainbow awaiting you after rain (or tears). Love Love...

Hugs,
Mummy Dearest

Abby & Ashley, you're a bundle of joy!

Dearest Abby & Ashley,

Last night, on our way home from your rehearsal at the Art House, Mummy's jaws almost dropped when Ashley tested Abby on Singular and Plural Qs. She got full marks! What really surprised Mummy was you only spent 15 mins coaching her the night before. This is the greatest joy when I see my children taking care and learning from each other.

This morning, Abby snuggled into our bed and we were hugging each other. Mummy asked Abby what she wants to be when she grows up, here's what she said:

Mummy: Abby, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Abby: When Kor Kor becomes the Singer, I'll be the Dancer to dance around him.
Mummy: That's nice. What happens to your Doctor dream?
Abby: When Kor Kor becomes the Doctor, I'll be the Nurse to help Kor Kor.
Mummy: How about when Kor Kor becomes the Farmer?
Abby: I'll be the Farmer Assistant
Mummy: How come you tie your dreams with Kor Kor's dreams?
Abby: I love Kor Kor

Abby, your words moved me. We are lucky and blessed to have one another. Ashley Kor Kor, Mummy and Daddy also love you dearly.

Hugs & Kisses,
Mummy Dearest

Ashley and Mum are happy to leave the school bag in the car

Dearest Ashley,

It has been 4 weeks since you started attending Our Fun Place After-school Sudy Group. I can see that you enjoy yourself very much in Our Fun Place. What more would you ask for when you could play with your buddies every day after school? Likewise, Mummy is happy that you finish all your daily homework and revision in Our Fun Place and when we get home, we can truly relax.

Eversince you started P4, you develop a new habit of leaving your school bag in the car as you have completed all your work. Am sure you feel good that you have done all your work in the day and you could spend the evening playing with your toys, watching Okto and reading story books. Mummy also feels relaxed as I don't have to revise school work with you. This is the best arrangement for all of us. Am even happier you scored very well in your spellings. Well done!

Keep up your good work!

Hugs,
Mummy Dearest

Ashley, you're living my dreams....

Dearest Ashley,

Do you know every Thursday morning is Mummy's favourite day? I got to listen to your beautiful voice when you practised your Devotion songs such as Hold me close, Heaven on the inside of me, Century and Mighty To Save for School's Assembly later. It is indeed an honour to lead the singing in front of the whole school. Just you and another P5 singer plus Mr. Peck and a P6 student as the guitarists. Wow! This is awesome!

When I first heard your solo track on the CD, I was shedding tears of joy. Your voice is crystal clear and powerful and you recorded this in one take. Bravo! You know how much Mummy loves to sing. My dream is to cut an album with my kids and some solo tracks. I hope to be like you, to step into the recording studio oneday. You're such a lucky boy to be surrounded by good teachers who appreciate your talent and even got you to record a solo track. Mummy was never given such opportunity when I was your age but I have no regrets when I see my dream is fulfilled by you. I am truly proud of you and am happy to support your passion.

Another dream of mine was to sing and play the piano at the same time. I thank you for teaching me how to play the piano but I find it difficult to remember the keys. Whenever you play the piano, I will be mesmerised by your music. You really have the gift for music and Mummy is very amazed how you could remember the piece in just one day. If you could practise more and familiarize yourself with the notes, you will be even more amazing! Always give your BEST, nothing less. Kieran Kor Kor is an excellent example. He has the gift for Music and he does not take it for granted. He practises every day for 3~4 hours till 2~3am. That's why each time he plays, he takes everyone's breath away!

You go, my boy. With your talent and hardwork, you could join Kieran in Berklee, College of Music in Boston, USA when you grow up.

Love,
Mummy Dearest

Abby, you're such a thoughtful girl

Dearest Abby,

When Mummy suggested a Princess Theme for your 5th Birthday Party, here's your reply:

Abby:"No, Mummy."
Mummy: "Why?"
Abby: "Because the boys will not come if it is a Princess Party. How about Sponge Bob Party?"
Mummy: "That's so sweet of you. Ok. We'll do a Sponge Bob Party."

Frankly, Mummy is pleasantly surprised that you thought of others before self. I know how much you wanted a Princess Party but for the benefit of the boys, you chose a Sponge Bob party.

Mummy is very happy that you put yourself in others' shoes before you make a choice. That's really nice.

Now I know why kids from P1 to P5 from our student care enjoy playing with you. Friends feel good when you spare a thought for them.

Love,
Mummy Dearest

Ashley, we will get you a piano very soon

Dearest Ashley,

Last night, Mum & Dad were immersed in your music as you played "Fur Elise" and "Indian War Dance" on the keyboard. We were pleasantly surprised that you could remember the piece you just learned on Thursday. See how easy it is for you when comes to Music? Did it cross your mind that learning is so fun, relaxing and comes so naturally when you are truly interested in it?

Your deep interest in piano is obvious to us and as promised, we will get you a piano so that you could even compose your own music.

Do you remember you wrote your composition in your 1st month of learning piano? Will be nice if you continue your composition. Do you know that Jiu Jian Laoshi started composition when he was 19 years old? You've also heard Kieran Kor Kor's composition. The feeling of playing your own composition brings you to the next level, isn't it?

Nothing beats learning from your idol, Kieran Kor Kor right? So kind of him to offer to teach you while waiting to go Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA in May. You could follow his footstep provided you work hard in music and study and earn yourself a scholarship.

Remember I shared with you and your friends in Our Fun Place the education steps I took from Primary school to University? You're taking the 1st step now. Two more years you will be taking the PSLE and that will dtermine your next step. If your PSLE results are straight A*, you will have alot of choices of very good schools like RI and Hwa Chong. There, you will continue your Music learning as most top schools provide a very conducive environment to pursue your Music passion which will set the path for you to take the next higher step to Music specialization in College.

I cannot stress the importance of PSLE as this is a very critical path which may even decide your destiny. Two more months will be your CA1. With daily focus and hardwork, CA1 will be a breeze to you. Come PSLE, you will just do your usual thing and Ace the exam.

Ashley, you can do it. You can control your Destiny!

Cheers!
Proud Mum & Dad

How to move up the Hierarchy?

Dearest Ashley,

Interestingly, you asked me about the blue collars and white collars workers in the school hierarchy. The one at the top of the hierarchy is the one who usually earns the most and possesses the most power. So, the question is, how to earn more and move up the hierarchy/value chain?

A simple idea to move up the hierarchy, in turn earn more: To earn more you must learn more. When you grow up, the salary you will receive from your employer will be determined by the value you add. To earn more, learn more. Out-read your competition. Out-study them. Out-improve them. Out-succeed them. Be so knowledgeable, competent and brilliant at what you do that the company can't run without you. Become indispensable.

Awareness precedes choice which precedes results. As you learn what the best do, you will develop new awareness. With better awareness, you will make better choices. And with better choices, you are certain to see better results. Investing in learning and geeting your skills to world class is the smartest investment you'll ever make. Master your craft and you'll get to greatness.

So take the first step today. Rather than watching TV tonight, make the time to read. Learn what the superstars do to stay on top. Learn how to create greater wellness in your life. Learn how to master your time. Learn how to live your highest life.

Love,
Mummy Dearest

Kor Kor, you haven't taught me P1 homework for a long time

Dearest Abby,

Mummy almost fell off my chair when you said to Kor Kor that he has not taught you P1homework for a long time. I'm sure you missed his coaching right?

Mummy was pleasantly surprised when Kor Kor downloaded a P1 Math worksheet and coached you to complete the online Math worksheet while Mummy was busy with my work. Kor Kor announced proudly that you scored 94 marks for the paper. When we visited the bookshop to buy his textbooks, he insisted I buy one P1 Math Assessment book for you. I gave in to his persistent request and he started coaching you using the assessment book when we got home. Mummy must say both of you are amazing. One, so willing to teach and one so willing to listen. A Perfect Match!

Am sure Kor Kor will find time to coach you this weekend. Happy learning and happy coaching, my wonderful children!

Hugs and Kisses,
Mummy Dearest

Ashley's Target for CA1

Dearest Ashley,

You sounded so confident in the car. As agreed, we will document your CA1 targets in my blog - All As for all subjects including Music, Art, Social Studies and Behaviour. As promised, if you get straight As in CA1, your reward is $300. If you get A* for all subjects, your reward is $400.

It is less than 3 months to CA1. Do you have a plan to achieve your target? Think about it and we can discuss your action plan in the next few days. Once decided, you will have to follow your plan consistently so as not to slacken. Only then will you meet your target.

Mummy is confident you will achieve your goals. I got 3 A* and A for my PSLE on my own without tuition and parents' coaching. With lots of guidance from Our Fun Place's teachers, Mum and Dad, plus your hardwork, you have no doubts in achieveing your target, or even surpassing them.

You have our blessing and support, son.

Love,
Mummy

Why Kor Kor can sleep with Mummy?

Dearest Abby,

When you woke up in the middle of the night crying, "Why Kor Kor can sleep with Mummy?" Mummy knew you felt left out. Mummy immediately slept with you on the floor and scratched your back till you fell asleep again.

Sorry, Abby. Mummy had a splitting headache last night and slept very early. Kor Kor rested on my bed and fell asleep. I was unaware of him sleeping through the night until I heard your crying. You'll sleep with Mummy tonight ok? Mummy feels much better today. I'll read you 10 story books tonight ok? Mummy loves you and Kor Kor equally and with all my heart.

I love you very very much, my Dearest Princess Abby.

Hugs,
Mummy Dearest

Mum, I'm in my Tortoise costume as the volunteer for Speech & Drama

Dearest Ashley,

When you shared with me you are the only one in Drama club who volunteered for 2 days during recess to help in the new enrollment, Mummy is happy to hear that you stepped forward to help promote your Drama club. When I asked why you volunteered, your reply almost threw me off my chair! You replied, "At least I can talk." You really enjoy talking, don't you.

You also shared with me that you feel awkward walking around in the tortoise suit. However, Mrs. Chang encouraged you by saying your tortoise suit is very cute. Mummy also shared with you that you look adorable in that suit too. Your enrollment exercise will be more efffective if you wear the suit as people from far or near will know you're from Drama club the instance they see you compared to you wearing school uniform, right?

Keep up your volunteerism spirit. In the future, if teachers ask you to volunteer for community service, school projects, etc., Mummy encouraged you to go for it as the experience you gained from talking and interacting with people from different walks of life will certainly enrich your school life. School is more than studying. School is a fun place to enjoy new experiences, if and only if you choose to volunteer. Well done, my boy. Mummy is very proud of you.

Warm Regards,
Mummy who also volunteered in Pri School to visit and perform for old folks homes and orphanages.

A Blessing in disguise

Dearest Ashley and Abby,

This morning marks a new beginning for us as for the first time, we have no Aunty.

Ashley, Mummy was pleasantly surprised when you started to throw your PJ & clothes in the washing machine first thing you woke up. You even knew how to operate the washing machine and poured in the washing power. After that, we hang the clothes to dry together. Thanks for your great help and initiative, Son. You gave me the confidence not to hire another helper. With you and Abby's help, am sure we will keep our home clean and cosy. Hey, another great way to bond as a family with Daddy too!

Abby, Mummy was very touched when you gave your precious Princess comb to Aunty before she left. You are so thoughtful and kind.

From now on, we'll have to wash our own dishes, clothes, shoes, car and other housework. Am sure with good time management and spirit, we can do it together. Thank you for all your help. Mummy and Daddy are very proud of you.

Cheers!

A Fine Young Gentlemen in the making...

Dearest Ashley,

I was very happy to witness the following good behaviour in you yesterday:

1. You came forward to give Ashton a bear hug. What a caring Big Brother you are!
2. You focused on your Math homework despite the noises around you. Keep that Focus going!
3. You opened the door for Mummy and Abby. What a Gentlemen you are!
4. You left the last sushi for Mum. What a Thoughtful son!
5. You ran back to the car to fetch the sweater for Abby. What a kind Big Brother you are!
6. You proudly announced the good news that you were among the 3~4 students selected to sing along with Mr. Peck at Devotion, Thursday Christain singing assembly in term two. Wow! That's a Great Honor!
7. You practise your script in The Adventure of Wei Wei Kang Kang first thing you woke up. Wow! That's unstoppable passion you've got!

There's a Big Idea: Your days are your life in miniature. As you live your hours, so you create your years. As you live your days, so you craft your life. What you do today is actually creating your future. The words you speak, the thoughts you think and the actions you take are defining your destiny - shaping who you are becoming and what life will stand for. Small choices lead to giant consequences - over time. There's no such thing as an unimportant day.

Keep the fire burning and live each day with Brilliance!!!!!!!!!

Love, love,
Mummy

We will "BOOM!" like the Bamboo

Dearest Ashley,

Thanks to you, Mummy got to know your friends Don and Chevelle better. You guys had fun participating in Our Fun Place's holiday programmes. Now, you got to hang out with them in our after-school study group and I can see your friendship grew every minute. My wish is that you will support one another, academically and emotionally as pure friendship is hard to come by and takes time to nurture.

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised that they shared with me over lunch that they read my blog with their Mum! When I asked them what were their thoughts after reading my blog on How Chinese Grow Bamboo?

They said, "Learning is like growing bamboo. We may not show tremendous improvement in the first four years but the fifth year, we will "Boom!" like the bamboo."

Mum said, "Provided the first four years you worked hard like the farmer, then you will see the "BOOM!" in the fifth year."

Everyone of you has that internal energy to "BOOM!" You got to keep working on it. Gather this powerful energy over time. Be hardworking and be patient. AWAKEN the GIANT WITHIN YOU!

I sincerely wish all of you at Our Fun Place will "BOOM!" like the bamboo in school and in life!

Hugs & kisses,
Mummy

Ashley's SWOT Analysis

Dearest Ashley,

Remember what we discussed on the last night of 2010? Here's the recap:

Ashley's Strengths perceived by Mummy: Jovial, Friendly, Talented and Kind
How you see yourself: Singing, Computer, Wii and generate great ideas

Ashley's Weaknesses perceived by Mummy: Too sensitive, self-centred, emotional rollar-coaster and yet to live up to your full potential
How you see yourself: Time & Anger Management and have not reached my full potential

Ashley's Goals:
1. Practise ABC at all times
2. Talk about my frustrations and emotions, don't act out.
3. Come in 100th position in school
4. Act in a English Musical like Lion King

Ashley's Distractions: Wii, Computer games and TV

I know you're unhappy when Mummy talked about your weaknesses. As mentioned, any humans, kids or adults, need to be aware of their current state of behaviour/mind before one can make changes/improvements to better one's life. As promised, I will not keep reminding you of your shortcomings as you are now aware and make a conscious effort to improve. A promise is a promise. Cheers!

Yours,
Mummy always by your side

Ashley, you're so sweet

Dearest Ashley,

At the carpark, Mummy commented that you must be very happy to see Max and Donovan everyday. So sweet of you to say, "No, I want to see Mummy everyday". You really know how to make your Mummy's day.

It has been your 3rd day in Our Fun Place Before/ After school study group. Apart from the vegetables, you like everything about the center. Am very happy to see you play and study with your peers with guidance from teachers. The daily fertilization and happy mood will benefit you for life.

You learned about heat wave, ozone layer, haze and other current affairs too. You will become more knowledgeable each day.

So funny of you to complain about Ashton keep hugging you when you are eating and studying in the centre. You're Ashton's idol and you need to be a good role for your little cousin. Next time when he hugs you, please give him a bear hug and thank him for hugging you ok?

I enjoyed watching you guys played black or white and virus at the playground. Work Hard, Play Hard.

Look forward to another enriching day at Our Fun Place.

Cheers!

Ashley: When I look into Mum's eyes, I see....

Dearest Ashley,

Likewise, Mum is equally touched when you shared with me so openly how you felt about me during our annual review on 31st Dec:

Mummy's strengths: Communicative, Adventeous, Open-minded and a good massager

Mummy's Weaknesses: Weak in Technology, teaching, playing piano, contact lens and not sporty

Mummy's Goals: Expand my search and enrichment business, provide us well but not give us everything, Ashley to be more sensible, has better time and anger management

Mummy's Distractions: Too many things to remember and work too hard on the computer

Mummy is happy to hear all these precious words straight from your heart. You are indeed my "stomach worm" who understands me so well. Love you, son for who you are.

Hugs,
Mummy Dearest

Abby: When I look into Mum's eyes, I see....

Dearest Abby,

Mummy was very touched when you shared your views about Mummy with such a pure heart:

Mummy's Strengths: Singing, Dancing, copy drawings and reading story books

Mummy's Weaknesses: Calculation, Piano, music homework and riding scooter

Mummy's Goals: Spend more time with us, my kids can take care of themselves and be obedient, provide us well but not give us everything we ask for

Mummy's Distrations: Distracted by Kor Kor's computer games, iPhone, work too long on the computer

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard you said, "provide us well but not give us everything we ask for" which I shared the story once with you and Kor Kor at least three months back. You could remember and express the teaching so clearly. Wow! Mummy is very touched as you also practised the teaching. Sometimes, you asked me to buy you a new toy or a packet of snack, Mummy rejected and you accepted without any tantrum. Mummy is glad that you understand this teaching at such a young age.

Your birthday is coming and let's plan for it. This, Mummy will provide. Love you, my sweetie pie.

Love,
Mummy Dearest

Mum, I have higher EQ!

Dearest Ashley,

Am so happy that you like all your P4 Teachers. That's a great start to P4.

Here's our conversation this morning:

Ashley: Mum, there was a girl from the top class who accidentally joined our class. Our Math teacher had to walk her back to her own class. I have higher EQ. When I walked into the Hall, I looked for Teamwork 3 and the row no. I queued up in row 15 and everybody followed me.

Mum: That's the quality of a leader. See ahead of others and lead your people in the right direction. Well done, Ashley. (Actually, Mum didn't correct you that this trait is not EQ but situational awareness. EQ is the art of dealing with one's and others' emotion. Anyway, continue your good work)

Ashley: Mum, I was nominated by my teammates to be the Project Leader.

Mum: That's nice. Ashley, how would you described your behaviour on your 1st day of school?

Ashley: I seem to talk less and pay more attention in class.

Mum: That's wonderful. Continue your ABC - Attentive, Best Behaviour Courteous!

Cheers!

A new Goal you set for yourself this morning

Dearest Ashley,

Mummy is always amazed by what you said to me in the car while sending you to school. This morning, you said you will surely go to the Top 4 classes in P5 as you will take Higher Chinese, just like Donovan, your Best Friend. Now that you mentioned Donovan, you are aware that he got the Best Improvement Award last year and attended the School's Leadership camp. That's so Cool! See, you can have fun in school and still do well in your study.

With more awareness and planning, Mummy is confident that you will have better Time and Anger Management. Control your emotions, not the other way round. Emotion means Energy in Motion. Positive Emotion will drive you in a wonderful direction. Conversely, Negative emotion will drive you in a dreadful direction. We had our fair share of Positive and Negative Emotions. You are a Smart Boy who will now make better choices in choosing what Emotions to wear daily. Good Choices lead to Good Outcome. You're happier and everyone around you will be happier too.

Positive Emotion also leads you to realise your full potential. When you can be with the Stars, why settle for the Treetops? Remember the ACSI Ruby boy? Like you, he was an average student from P1 to P4. He shot for the stars in P5 & P6 and became the TOP Student in School. Ashley, now is the time for you to realise your full potential. You will be amazed by what you can achieve! Trust yourself and give it your BEST SHOT!!!

Thanks to you, I got back my blogging feel in the early morning. Look forward to hearing your 1st day at school later at Our Fun Place. Love you, son.

Cheers!
Mummy The Positive

A Brand New You!

Dearest Ashley,

Today is the 1st day of school and Mummy is as excited as you. On 31 Dec, we did a review of 2010 using SWOT - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities/Goals and Threats/Distractions. 2010 had been a Great Year for us:

1. You got into the Finals of your first audition, the Lion King Musical Audition
2. You got your first Chinese Musical role, the Singing Dog in Wei Wei Kang Kang Li Xian Ji
3. You came in 1st in your first Pei Hwa Got Talent Contest
4. You showed improvement in school, academically as well as attitude so much so that you were selected to be a Prefect in P4.
5. You helped Mummy in Our Fun Place, leading the singing and dancing and even got your friends to enroll in our holiday programmes, before/after study group and other enrichment programmes.

Though you did not meet the goal you set for yourself in the beginning of 2010, you were one step closer. That's Success.

Going forward into 2011, Tommorrow will be even better. You will achieve even better results because you will pay more attention in class, be a better role model in school and do your best in everything you choose to work on. Remember, talk is cheap. Action counts. Make that Difference! You go, my Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers!
